On Tuesday 20 May 2008 the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master attended the half yearly Communication of the Provincial Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Ayrshire. The meeting was held within Lodge Thistle and Rose No.169 Stevenston and was presided over by Most Excellent Companion James R. Hodge the Grand Superintendent. He was invited as the Provincial Grand Master of Ayrshire but attended on this occasion as a Past First Principal of Thistle Royal Arch Chapter No.867 Stewarton. Dispensation has been received from Supreme Grand Chapter of Scotland for him to attend any future Communication regaled as the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master which he looks forward to doing. His attendance was, hopefully, to confirm the fraternal good relationship which exists between the two Bodies and perhaps further cement the friendship. After the usual administration being dealt with a Lecture was enjoyed on the Banners of Royal Arch Freemasonry expertly delivered by Most Excellent Companion David Ogilvy of Progress Royal Arch Chapter of Glasgow. At the close of the Communication the Provincial Grand Master thanked the Grand Superintendent for the courtesy extended to him and expressed the Good Wishes of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Ayrshire to all at Provincial Grand Chapter. An invitation has been extended to the Grand Superintendent and the Provincial Grand Scribe "E" to attend our June Communication of Provincial Grand Lodge.
On Thursday evening 15 May 2008, the RWPGM paid an informal visit to Lodge Irvine St Andrew No.149, RWM Bro. William PD Lindsay presiding. The EA Degree was conferred upon one candidate by RWM Bro. Craig Brand and the brethren from Lodge Rutherglen Royal Arch No.116. An excellent Degree which was enjoyed by everyone in attendance. During the course of the Meeting the RWM conferred Honorary Membership upon two well-known visiting brethren from south of the border. Brother James Stewart Hamilton, a MM of Lodge Thistle and Crown No.1167 and a Past Master of Hadrian Lodge No.1970 in the Province of Durham was first to be so honoured. The second Brother was Sydney Allan Winter, a PM and Secretary of Lodge Excelcior No.6609 in the province of Northumberland. Both brethren had an association with "149" for over 30 years. It was indeed a proud evening for both of them.
Lodge Royal Blues No.399 hosted a special meeting on Wednesday 14 May 2008 to celebrate one of their Honorary Members, Bro Archibald Chalmers, becoming RWPGM of Ayrshire. Bro Gillan Kennedy RWM, presiding. Speaking on behalf of Lodge Thistle No. 127 was RWM Jim Hall, on behalf of Dalry Blair Lodge No. 290 was Bro William Boe, on behalf of Lodge Beith St John's No. 157 was PM Bro Kevin Baker and on behalf of Lodge Royal Blues No.399 was Bro John C Taylor PM 1408/Hon Mem 399. In response to the compliments paid to him by the Speakers, the RWPGM expressed his gratitude and appreciation of the gesture of holding such a meeting. The brethren enjoyed the hospitality of the host Lodge in the downstairs lounge.
On Sunday 11 May 2008 the RWPGM, accompanied by 9 other PGL Office- bearers, attended the Annual Joint Divine Service of Lodge Thistle No. 127, Lodge St Maurs No.1398 and Lodge Dunlop Caledonia No.1408 held within St Columba's Parish Church, Stewarton. The brethren were welcomed into the Church by our new PG Chaplain, Bro. Rev Ian W. Benzie, who then preached an enjoyable and thought provoking Sermon. The Host Lodge, "127", provided hospitality to all in the adjoining church hall. Lodge Thistle was led by RWM Jim Hall, Lodge St Maurs By RWM Quinton Fulton and Lodge Dunlop Caledonia by IPM Hugh Halbert.
On Friday 9 May 2008 the RWPGM paid an informal visit to Lodge St Matthew (Kilwinning) No.549. The RWM, Brother John Docherty Scoular Irvine, presided over a Master Mason Degree conferred by WSW Brother Frank Hill. The visitors were treated to the usual "549" hospitality at the close of the meeting.
On Wednesday 7 May the RWPGM paid an informal visit to Lodge St Thomas Kilwinning No.433 and witnessed a fine Mark Master Mason Degree conferred by the RWM Bro. James McKinstry, and his Office-Bearers. Although the good weather may have put some of the brethren off the attendance was very good. Lodge hospitality in Dalmellington is legendary. For those of you who have never visited 433, the photograph (below right) is of their unique Past Masters Board and is well worth seeing. It gives an excellent three dimensional effect.
The Annual Divine Service of Lodge St James Newtown-upon-Ayr was held on Sunday 4 May 2008 within St Columba's Church in Midton Road Ayr. The service was conducted by the Rev. Fraser Aitken who warmly welcomed all of the Brethren and visitors in to the Church. After an uplifting sermon and with the Brethren being in fine voice, everyone returned to the Church Hall where a wonderful spread had been laid on by the Brethren and Ladies of Lodge No.125
Fri 2 May 2008 was a fine night at Lodge St James Tarbolton (Kilwinning) No.135. The RWPGM visited the Lodge with a Deputation from the PGL. On this occasion Lodge Prestwick No.1060 conferred a MMM degree to the very high standard that we have come to expect of them. At the start of the meeting the RWPGM with the assistance of Bro. Colin McCormick PM presented Bro. Hugh Wilson with a Diploma to mark 50 years of faithful and dedicated service to Lodge St James. Also in attendance was Right Worshipful Bro. John Chalmers who is the Provincial Assistant Grand Master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of South Africa Northern (Irish Constitution). What a coincidence that he should be related to our own RWPGM! His Paternal Grandfather and RWPGM Archie's Paternal Grand Father were the same person. Unfortunately their GrandFather's first wife died in childbirth. Brother John's family was from the first marriage, Bro. Archie's from the second. Also present was Brother Arthur Campbell MM of Lodge Thistle No.127 who proposed the RWPGM in to the Craft.
